Emergence of lateral roots

The three diagrams to the right, are a simplified representation of how lateral roots are initiated. Fig. 1  shows a bulge forming as a result of cell division within the pericycle. Rapid cell division here results in the formation of a lateral meristem from which the developing lateral root emerges. In Fig.2  the meristematic region has pushed the endodermis outwards, and in Fig. 3, the lateral root has ruptured the epidermis, and the underlying root meristem, is protected by a root cap.
